Abstract

Energy dissipators are integral part of dam spillways. Various types of energy dissipators such as stilling basin, bucket type energy dissipators etc. are used depending on the tail water and type of rock available downstream of the spillway. Roller bucket is designed when the tail water is greater than 1.1 times the sequent depth. Although Roller bucket is used at several dams in India and abroad, there are many limitations to the design and operation of this type of energy dissipator. Damages to the roller bucket are also reported at several projects. This paper discusses the limitations in design and operation of both the solid and slotted roller buckets. One case study each of the two types is presented to illustrate the importance of model studies.
