A survey on the fish diversity in Nalbari district of Assam with special reference to the classified ornamental fishes

Abstract

Nalbari District is situated in between 26°N and 27° N latitude and 91° E and 97° E longitude in the state of Assam. The entire area of the District is situated at the plans of the Brahmaputra Valley. Tributaries of the River Brahmaputra are wild in nature and have enormous contribution towards the fishery economy of the district. Most of the beels directly acts as the perspective spawning ground for large growing riverine fishes along with a large number of Ornamental fishes. The fishes of Nalbari district belong to the class Teleostomi with the 6 important Indian Major Carps (IMCs) species, 2 feather backs, 6 species of murrels and 17 cat fish species. It is also supplemented by a large number of intermediate group and minor group of fish species belonging to 6 major orders Cypriniformes, Siluriformes, Perciformes, Channiformes, Clupeiformes, Mastacembeliformes etc. Of these the Cyprinidae family belonging to the order Cypriniformes dominating the water bodies with about 40 species which is followed by another family Begridae belonging to the order Siluriformes with 7 species. Most of the intermediate and minor group fish species are of good ornamental value.
