Abstract

Margaret Atwood established her place in English Literature with the publication of the Edible woman in 1969. She explores gender stereotype through characters that strictly adheres to themselves and those who defy their constraints. The narrative point of view shifts from first to third person in the novel. It is the story of a young woman whose sane, structured, consumer-oriented world starts to slip out of focus. Following her engagement Marian feels her body and herself are becoming separated. As Marian begins endowing food with human qualities that cause her to identify with it, she finds herself unable to eat it repelled by metaphorical cannibalism. Margaret Atwood in a foreword written for the vigro edition of the Edible woman described the works as proto feminist rather than feminist.
