Flood hazard in bagri region of Murshidabad district, West Bengal Mollah Swati Assistant Professor, Geography, Dumkal College, Basantapur, Murshidabad, West Bengal Online published on 20 June, 2013. Abstract While scientific studies do show that floods are inherent to the ecological setting of the Gangetic plain and human beings can do precious little to prevent or control them, there is no doubt that unthinking human interventions has increased the vulnerability of the society in Murshidabad to floods over the year. The human settlements have even encroached into the riverbeds. Every part of the wetlands has been intensively used for agricultural purpose. The water flows through the rivers at least 2 m above the general level of the country during high tide. Thus the decay of the drainage channels, declining ground slope, blockade of the deltaic estuaries due to sedimentation, expanding urbanization and shrinking wetlands and finally rising mean sea level are all combined to threat the delicate balance of the riverine environment of the delta. These moribund rivers can still play a vital role in discharging floodwater, so any intervention or encroachment into these channels is suicidal. All these factors are combined to result ever expanding flooded areas. This expansion of flooded areas continues unabated in the face of steadily increasing expenditure on the flood management. The present study has been presented as a qualitative analysis. It is based on various government reports and literature. Field survey was done to the different rivers for detail study of their conditions in the study area.
