Changing trends of organic farming in India: with special reference to Manipur Singh N. Chandrashekhar, Associate Professor, Devi Haobam Monica, Oinam Elvina Department of Geography Standard College, Imphal East Online published on 22 January, 2016. Abstract This paper presents an interpretation study of the regional variations and emergent trends of the practice of organic farming in Manipur. The principles of organic farming apply to agriculture in the broadest sense, including the way people tend soils, water, plants and animals in order to produce, prepare and distribute food and other goods. In this broad sense the practice of bio-farming and their productivity at the district level has been evaluated on the basis of spatio-temporal change in agriculture with the help of four indicators-bio-supporting crop yield, population supporting capacity of the cropland, productive value and price and labour productivity. The use of green manuring, methods of composting, use of vermicompost and use of bio-fertilizers have been considered as functions of bio-farming. Though the nature of the terrain (Valley and hills) seems to be of primary importance in a complex set of physical (abiotic) and non physical (biotic) determinants, the populousness of the areas and stage of agricultural development seem to act in combination with physical characteristics of land with human influence and social well-being in the capacity of accept developmental inputs. The varying degree of acceptability seems to cause sharp regional variation in the use of organic farming methods and their productivity. The need for future developmental effort in consonance with the nature of the terrain and social well being has been stressed in terms of sustainability.
