Abstract The study was carried out from January 2012 to December2013 to evaluate the impact of pollution and the degradation of ecological parameters of Mathabhanga river. Ground water is contaminated with arsenic and other heavy metals, free flow of water is disturbed by building barriers and many other obstacles, Huge siltation coming from encroachment, industrial effluents from sugar mill and other factories is responsible for rising the river bed altered the habitat of the aquatic environment as well as the water quality of the river is changing with the addition of pollutants. The objective of the paper is to highlighted the impacts of pollution on the health of the water and aquatic species and find out ways and means for the management of the ecology of the river.
