Abstract The economy of any nation requires quality human resource to grow and India is no exception. Sound education system is a basic necessity for the development of a nation's human resource. Higher education requires continuous patronage from the various sectors of a nation's economy. Indian Higher education system has come a long way since independence. Over the years, various reforms of different five-year plans and various commissions’ recommendations have shaped up the present education system in India. The report of the University Education Commission under the Chairmanship of Dr. S. Radhakrishnan has highlighted the importance of higher education in India. The current century being a knowledge centric one, the importance of higher education in India has seen an unprecedented growth in number of students, the number of courses and the amount of public funding. The maintenance of the efficacy of any education system in a country as huge as India is very difficult and requires continuous observation so as to avoid any regional, social or sectoral imbalance.
