Working performance of state cooperative banks in India with special reference to southern region-A study

Abstract

Cooperative banking is basically a people based concept. It occupies a pivotal and prominent role in the economic liberation of millions of people of our nation. It has emerged as a social and healthy banking institution providing need-based quality banking services essentially to the middle and lower classes and the marginalized sections of the society those who consists 75 percent of our country. Cooperative Banks have assisted in boosting the growth rate of Indian economy by providing a fillip to non-agricultural sectors in the country by making available cheap and hassle free finance. A healthy cooperative banking system is essential for Indian economy striving to achieve growth and remain stable in competitive global business environment. Therefore, it is very essential to protect the cooperatives by examining its status of financial health from time to time. By keeping this in mind, the study aims to analyze the status of StCBs of Southern Region of India which includes the following StCBs for the study; Andaman & Nicobar Islands State Cooperative Bank (ANISCB), The Andhra Pradesh State Cooperative Bank (APCOB), Karnataka Apex Cooperative Banks (KASCB), Kerala State Cooperative Bank (KSCB), Pondicherry State Cooperative Bank (PSCB) and Tamil Nadu Apex State Cooperative Banks (TNSCB).
