Abstract In India, rural development has always attracted the attention of the researchers and policy makers. Despite implementing a number of programmes for creating gainful employment opportunities and to improve the quality of lives of rural masses, rural development continues to be a key policy challenge. Rural development essentially reflects in the improvements in the economic well-being of people living in villages. 2011 census report shows that 69 percent of the people still reside in rural areas. Hence, the development of the country takes place through the development of rural people. As per the Suresh Tendulkar committees report 41.8 percent of rural people fall under the BPL category. The MGNREGA programme has provided total household employment opportunity is around 34.60 crores. The MGNREGA provided employment to 4.98 crore household generating 229.86 crore person days during the period of 2012–13. The paper reveals that the scheme has high work participation for marginalized groups as person days generated by SC, ST and women ware 23 percent, 16 percent and 54 percent respectively year 2013–14, in comparison to the number of person days of SC, ST and women being 25 percent, 36 percent and 40 percent respectively in the year of2006-07. MGNREGA programme has lunched initial stage 200 district highly response of this programme. After this programme covered all over India, year wise increasing fund in central government because implementation of employment generation and income increases.
