Abstract

The present study deals with the identification and documentation of plant diversity in and around Government Degree College Ramban, Jammu and Kashmir. The college is located at 12° 94′. 44′‘N Latitudes and 075° 16′. 48′’E longitudes with an average altitude of 780 meters. The college campus is spread over 44 kanals and consists of some trees, shrubs and herbs. A total of 65 plant species were recorded belonging to 39 families viz. Acanthaceae, Aizoaceae, Amaranthaceae, Apocynaceae, Araceae, Arecaceae, Asparagaceae, Asphodelaceae, Aspleniaceae, Asteraceae, Buxaceae, Cannabaceae, Cannaceae, Commelinaceae, Crassulaceae, Cupressaceae, Cycadaceae, Cyperaceae, Dennstaedtiaceae, Equisetaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Fabaceae, Lamiaceae, Leguminosae, Malvaceae, Marchantiaceae, Myrtaceae, Nyctaginaceae, Oleaceae, Oxalidaceae, Pinaceae, Platanaceae, Poaceae, Polygonaceae, Proteaceae, Pteridaceae, Rosaceae, Sapindaceae and Solanaceae. Most of the genera belonged to family Asteraceae. Among spermatophytes maximum species diversity was recorded of angiosperms. The maximum plant species were herbs, followed by trees and shrubs. However, some alien invasive plant species especially weeds were invaded and proliferated progressively in the study area. The proliferations of these alien invasive species have negatively impacted the understory herbaceous vegetation. Further, the documentation of existing flora of college will be useful to the students, staff of college, botanists, taxonomists, ecologist as well as general public involved in biodiversity initiatives for sustainable development.
