Abstract Emotional intelligence is an ability to understand and manage one's own emotions, and those of the people around him. Those with a high degree of emotional intelligence know their feeling, emotions and how they can affect others. For a successful leader, emotional intelligence is his main feature for being successful. According to Goleman (1995), emotional intelligence is comprised of five key elements viz. Self-awareness, Self-regulation, Motivation, Empathy and Social skills. The researcher has taken up an attempt to study the significance of difference among the scores of various elements of Emotional Intelligence of the Principals/Heads of Higher Sec. Schools.. Survey method of research was adopted to collect the required data among the Principals/Heads of Higher Sec. Schools in and around Coimbatore city. With a view to assess the emotional intelligence of the Principals/Heads of the schools, the Swinburne University Emotional Intelligence Test was availed. The Swinburne University Emotional Intelligence Test (SUEIT) evaluates self-reported emotional intelligence (Palmer & Stough, 2001). The study revealed that the level of Education, Subject Specialization of the Principals and the Size and Management of the Schools have no influence on all the key elements of the Emotional Intelligence of the Principals/Heads of Higher Sec.
