A study on empowerment of teachers in relation to emotional competence

Abstract

Teachers are the builders of character and quality, developers of societal conduct and morals, and establishers of standards of excellence in their academic fields. Attracting and retaining high quality teachers is primary requirement for a strong, effective, and high quality educational system in any country. Empowerment encourages teachers to be involved in quality professional learning and providing it to educand. It recognizes teachers as the experts about teaching and learning issues. Emotional competence is the maturity at emotional level that is very essential in shaping human life. Emotional competence for teachers refers to personal and social skills that lead to superior performance in their teaching. Quality educational system, empowerment and emotionally competent teachers are the minimum requirements to meet the challenges posed by diversified educand. So, the present study is made on “A Study on Empowerment of teachers in relation to emotional competence”. A normative method, survey technique, and simple random sampling technique has been employed to a sample consisted of 400 higher secondary school teachers in selected districts in Thondaimandalam region of Tamilnadu. The investigator used Teachers Empowerment Scale (2017), and Emotional Competence Scale (2007) has been used for measuring the teachers’ empowerment and emotional competence. The descriptive analysis shows that empowerment of teachers and emotional competence was average in nature. The correlational analysis revealed that there exists positive relationship between empowerment of teachers and emotional competence. Teachers should develop good teaching skills, well planned for classroom instruction, empower themselves to mastery over subjects with expertise, motivate diversified students effectively for learning, manage classroom friendly, and tend to fulfil the daily need and progress of their students for their empowerment.
