Awareness of healthy diet for preventing or delaying bone loss in adults of District Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir

Abstract

A study on “Awareness of Healthy diet for preventing or delaying bone loss during adulthood” was carried out on 44 adults in both rural and urban areas. Information was collected with the help of comprehensive questionnaire which was designed so as to obtain information regarding the general information, general habits, general health, family history, food habits and opinion of the subjects towards the role of diet in preventing or delaying bone loss in adults. Most of the samples were females under the age group of 26–30 years. It was observed that majority of the samples adopted moderate lifestyle. Most of the samples did weight bearing exercise. Smoking was absent by majority of the samples. Exposure to sun light was felt to be important by majority of the samples. It was found that most samples were having ideal body weight and height. Minimum number of samples was with bone health complaints which were slip disc problem, pain and weakness of bones and joints. All the samples were both vegetarian and non-vegetarian. Majority of the samples were taking well-balanced diet with respect to four meals. Minimum number of samples skipped their meals because of low socio-economic status or lack of time. Maximum numbers of samples were taking different types of foods which help to minimize the risk of bone loss. Very least samples were taking high salty foods, carbonated and caffeine beverages. Maximum numbers of the samples were taking sufficient amount of water for keeping their bodies rehydrated. None of the sample consumed alcohol. Minimum of the samples were taking calcium and vitamin D supplements as they were not in need. Majority of the samples agreed that diet plays an important role in preventing or delaying bone loss during adulthood.
