Abstract

Groundwater is a renewable and finite natural resource, vital for man's life and socio-economic development. But, intense development in terms of accelerated industrial set-ups, uses of various chemicals and fertilizers for increasing production rate to fulfill the demand of the increasing population have caused threat to this precious natural resource. Addition of different pollutants and nutrients in the ground water through leaching from the surface and percolation has deteriorated ground water quality. The present study was conducted to assess the potability and suitability of ground water of rural areas of Lucknow district. All the physico-chemical parameters were found within the permissible range as prescribed by BIS:10500 (2012). Results obtained show that the ground water quality in these rural areas are good in terms of physiochemical characteristics. Further, the water quality index (WQI) at all the sites was recorded in good category. Results reveal that even after development activities taking place in the urban areas of Lucknow, adjoining rural areas are having good quality ground water
