Abstract This paper investigated environmental sustainability experiences and achievements at Debre Tabor University, Ethiopia, through the campus greening initiative approach undertaken from 2011 to 2015. Many arrangements were done before the implementation was undertaken, like preliminary survey for site selection, collection of essential materials, action plan preparation and designing map of the campus. As the university is still under construction and land is at high rate of degradation, the first action was control of soil erosion and stabilisation of gully through structural measures like stone terrace, check dams and stone bunds. Many earth-work and agronomic activities were also done for landscaping and campus beautification purpose, like lawn establishment, raising grasses and tree seedlings, compost preparation, and planting grasses and ornamental trees. More than 164,329 trees (49,441 exotic and 114,888 native trees) and more than 15 ha grasses were planted for soil and biodiversity conservation and landscape beautification issues. The plant survival rate count was done two times for each year, and the result shows that only less than 2.5% of the total seedlings planted were damaged basically due to construction activities. Continuous environmental awareness trainings, arboretum establishment, sustainable waste management practices were also the main focuses of this work. Due to these all, remarkable outputs of environmental sustainability were observed in Debre Tabor University, and the university is now becoming the exemplary and basis of experience for other neighbouring higher educational institutions.
