Abstract

Polycystic kidneys are a rare condition in avian species, and only a single case of polycystic kidneys in chicken hasrecently been reported as an incidental finding. Among other avian species, the disease has been reported in a pigeon and a pin tail duck. A 12 week old cockerel chicken carcass which had severe ascites and lameness prior to death was presented. A systematic necropsy revealed multiple clear fluid-filled, thin- and thick-walled cysts ranging in size from 2 - 40 mm diameter in different lobules of both the kidneys. The right ischiatic nerve plexus which runs under the kidney was flattened by a large thick walled cyst which we could correlate to the lameness exhibited by the bird. The histopathological features were consistent with a diagnosis of multiple renal tubular cysts originated from different segments of nephron. Cystic kidneys associated with renal pathology and lameness in chicken has not been reported yet. This is probably the first report on polycystic kidneys associated with ascites and lameness in a hybrid chicken that correlates renal pathology with clinical signs. Furthermore, we emphasize that when investigating ascites-lameness syndrome in chicken, cystic or neoplastic lesions in kidneys should be considered for differential diagnosis as these lesions can compress the sacral, ischiatic or sciatic nerve plexi leading to paralysis.
