Review of literature is a critical summary of research on a topic of interest, generally prepared to put a research problem in context or to identify gaps and weaknesses in prior studies so as to justify a new investigation. A good review summarizes the state of knowledge on a well-defined manner in concise and clear ways. The review needs to be written with exceptional clarity, cohesiveness, conciseness, and comprehensiveness. A literature review is a text of a scholarly paper, that includes the current knowledge including substantive findings, as well as theoretical and methodological contributions to a particular topic. The literature review included in a peer-reviewed journal article presenting usually precedes the methodology and results sections of the work.

A review tells the reader that the researcher knows the research in the area. A good review increases a reader ’ s confidence in the researcher's professional competence, ability and background. It also places a research project in a context and demonstrates its relevance by making connections to a body of knowledge and points out areas where prior studies agree, where they disagree and where major questions remain. It collects what is known up to a point in time and indicates the direction for future research. A good review identifies blind alleys and suggests hypotheses for replication. It divulges procedures, techniques and research designs worth copying so that a researcher can better focus hypotheses and gain new insights.
