Abstract This paper analyses how the joint family is gradually breaking down and undergoing a process of nuclearisation. Keeping in mind the fact that education is a powerful tool of change, a study was conducted to assess the attitudes of Youths towards the joint family system. For the present study, a simple random sampling procedure was adopted and the sample consisted of 240 First Semester students, belonging to different post-graduate faculties of Ravenshaw University, Cuttack, of Odisha during the academic session 2007–2008. From 240 students, 116 were male and 124 were female students. Information on different aspects of joint family were collected through interviews, with the help of interview schedule, developed specially for this purpose. The interview schedule had questions about the general background of the respondents and statements were framed to measure attitudes of the respondents regarding different aspects of joint family. Each question and statement has dichotomous responses in the form of “Yes” and “No” and “favourableness” and “unfavourableness” respectively. Top | |
