Abstract

The present study emphasized on assaying the impact of corporate governance on firm performance considering 175 companies from Economic Times-500 (thereafter ET-500) list in India extracted Annual Reports of respective companies and Capitaline plus Corporate Database. The study measured corporate governance through different practices of corporate governance (namely, board size, board independence, board meeting and CEO-duality). Whereas, firm performance is measured through financial ratio viz. return on capital employed. By use of pooled regression analysis the study exposed that board size was positively associated with firm performance. Similar result is also observed in the case of board independence. However, no statistically significant relationship is evident in the case of board meeting and CEO-duality with firm performance. Therefore, the result of the present study is useful to regulators, policy makers, inventors, researchers, analysts, and creditors as well as other players in the capital markets by providing further evidence on linkage between firm performance and corporate governance in Indian context. However, the study covers only ET-500 listed non-financial firms during five years from 2012 to 2016, considering the limited number of corporate governance variables as independent variable. Therefore, future study may consider larger number of companies listed in any recognized stock exchange for longer period of time and taking other corporate governance variables which has not been covered in this study.
