Abstract

Phloem sap samples of resistant and susceptible genotypes including 5 rice hybrids namely CORH2 (IR 58025A/C20R), IR 58025A (IR 4843A/PUSA 167 - 120 - 3 - 28), C20R (Chinese source), C10 (Chinese source) and IR 54742 - 22-19-3R (IRRI source) were screened to UV light, absorbing compounds by means ofhigh performance liquid chromatography. Laboratory estimation of gallic acid in phloem sap of rice hybrids and conventional varieties of 30 day old plant indicated that the resistant varieties had high level of gallic acid and recorded highest in lET 15423 (3787.5 μg/g wet leaf tissue) and lowest in hybrid CORH2 (316.586 μg/g wet leaf tissue). There existed a significant difference in the phenol content of resistant and susceptible genotypes. The resistant genotypes had 1.57 to 1.6 times more of phenols than T(N)1. The total soluble sugar content was consistently lower in the leaf sheath than in leaf blade. In IET 15423 it was highest with 3287 μg/g in leaf sheath and 4735.0 μg/g in leaf blade which was 1.3 times higher than T(N)1. Chlorophyll ‘a’ and ‘b’ content in T(N)l was 2.9 and 4.4 times higher than ASDl9. The total chlorophyll content in T(N)1 leaf sheath and leaf blade was 2.69 times higher than 1R54742-22-19-3R and 3.62 times higher than ASD 19, respectively.
