Abstract

Farmers apply fungicides to minimize the losses caused by fungal plant diseases. Now a days these fungicides are not only toxic to food chain but also create resistance against fungal pathogens. Now it is time to search organic substitute of fungicides which should not only be safe for ecosystem but they should not create resistance against plant pathogens. Regarding this, three leaf extracts (aqueous, acetone and methanol) of Cassia fistula with different concentrations (250µl, 500µl and 1000µl per 15 ml of PDA) were tested against Alternaria solani and Fusarium spp. through PFT method. Results of the experiment revealed that 93.3% (max.) growth inhibition of Alternaria solani was found with 1000µl concentration of methanolic leaf extract of Cassia fistula 3DAI while 86.2% growth inhibition was found with same concentration of methanolic leaf extract of Cassia fistula 5 DAI. The growth of Fusarium spp. was inhibited 69% (max.) with1000µl concentration of methanolic leaf extract of Cassia fistula 3DAI and 60% growth inhibition was found with same concentration of the same extract 5 DAI. However, 1000µl concentrations of other two leaf extracts of Cassia fistula (aqueous and acetone) also inhibited significant growth of these two plant pathogens. The findings show that leaf extracts of Cassi fistula have antifungal activities and can be use in plant disease management.
