Abstract

Orthodontists treat patients at almost all ages. But we work with a handicap when the patient presents with a dentofacial deformity which exceeds the limits of orthodontic correction. It may be because no growth is left so no growth modification can take place or no acceptable camouflage can be done. One or the other skeletal component is either in excess or deficient and we cannot depend upon growth or normal orthodontic intervention to correct the deformity. For such patients, surgical realignment of jaws or repositioning of dentoalveolar segments is the only viable treatment option.Surgery, here, is not a substitute to orthodontics, but it must be co-ordinated with orthodontics to achieve good results.
