Online published on 1 October, 2011. Abstract Recurrent aphthous ulcers represent a very common but poorly understood mucosal disorder. The etiology of aphthous ulcers appears to be multifactorial, with numerous causal and precipitating events. The first and the most important in the management of RAS is a proper and accurate assessment. The treatment of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) still remains nonspecific and is based primarily on empirical data. The goals of therapy include the management of pain and functional impairment by suppressing inflammatory responses, as well as reducing the frequency of recurrences or avoiding the onset of new aphthae. Preventive treatment modalities may reduce the number of future ulcers and facilitate healing of developed lesions. However, we recommend future treatment goals towards complete elimination of recurrent apthous stomatitis disease process without recurrences.
