Abstract

Objective

In the present invitro study the tensile bond strengths of two luting cements glass ionomer and zinc polycarboxylate were evaluated and compared to that of zinc phosphate cement taken as control. Dental cements main criticisms was their failure to form an adhesive bond tooth surface of the preparation or the metal casting. Various claims were made for superiority of the cementing agents compared with zinc phosphate cement in terms of adhesion and other characteristics.

Material and methods

Each of the three cements were tested twenty times by cementing the cast coping to the metallic die. The specimen was stored in distilled water at 37° C for 24 hours before the tensile strength, test was performed in universal testing machine using a cross head speed of 15mm/minute.

Results

The readings obtained at the breaking point of the cement layer where statistically analysed by Standard Analysis of Variances technique (ANOVA) with the one way classification for three luting cements, which compared the tensile strength of the cements. The difference between three luting cements with respect to their tensile bond strength were found to be significant at 196 level of significance. The computed Fratio (2984.62) was highly significantly different from unity; critical value of the ratio at the corresponding degree of freedom, i.e. 2 and 57 at 10 level of significance being just 4.98.

Conclusions

Glass ionomer showed the highest tensile bond strength followed by zinc polycarboxylate cement, whereas the zinc phosphate cement had the least tensile bond strength.
