Online published on 7 December, 2011. Abstract Introduction Coorg (Madikeri), a district situated in the southern region of Karnataka comprises mainly of coffee estates. The coffee estate workers form a minority of the population. The heath programs in the area are restricted to basic health services. The aim of this study is to provide an insight into the periodontal problems faced by this population and their periodontal health awareness. Method A total of 1034 individuals were examined and Samples from 2 age groups: 35–45 years and 45–55 years were taken. An interview and oral examination were conducted for recording data. The Community periodontal Index, recommended by WHO for epidemiological surveys of periodontal health was used. Results and Conclusion The analysis of the results obtained in this epidemiological study evidenced that periodontitis is prevalent among the coffee workers of Coorg. There is a dire need for improving their awareness on periodontal health, and primary dental health care should be provided for this population.
