Online published on 7 December, 2011. Abstract Masticatory muscle hypertrophy is characterized by unilateral or bilateral enlargement of the one or more masticatory muscles affecting both males and females after puberty. Its etiology remains unknown. Aesthetic consideration is usually the major concern of the patient. However, symptoms like limitations of mouth opening and discomfort in the region of the hypertrophied muscle are also reported. This paper reports a case ofmasseter muscle hypertrophy diagnosed using imaging modalities such as conventional radiography and magnetic resonance imaging. Differential diagnosis with other pathologies such as parotid gland tumors and muscle tumors is important for correct diagnosis and management.
