Rehabilitation of a Compromised Maxillectomy Defect with a Definitive Hollow Bulb Obturator

Abstract

Developmental anomalies, congenital defects, trauma and acquired lesions requiring partial or total maxillectomy creates anatomic defect that allows the oral cavity, maxillary sinus, nasal cavity and nasopharynx to become one confluent chamber. This creates disability in speech and deglutition. Prosthetic intervention, with maxillary obturator prosthesis, is necessary to restore the functions and esthetics in such patients by establishing the contours of the resected palate and by creating the functional separation of the oral cavity and sinus and the nasal cavity. The present article is a case report of a compromised Anamany class I maxillary defect with a hollow bulb obturator.
