Abstract Background Obesity and diabetes are most common nutritional and endocrine disorders in developed and developing countries and are related to immune response alterations. Recent studies suggest an association among diabetes, obesity and periodontitis. Myeloperoxidase(MPO) is a lysosomal protein, which is a neutrophil (PMN) specific enzyme stored in azurophilic granules. MPO enzyme is released due to interaction of PMNs with micro-organisms during phagocytosis in periodontitis. Materials and Methods Patients reporting to the Department of Periodontics & Orallmplantology, AB. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, Mangalore i.e., 60 patients (20 in each group) which included systemically healthy patients with chronic periodontitis-20 patients, non diabetic obese patients with chronic periodontitis-20 patients and Type II diabetic obese patients with chronic periodontitis-20 patients. Saliva of the patients was analyzed for the myeloperoxidase level spectrophotometrically. Results One wayAN OVA was applied. It was found that:
Myeloperoxidase level is increased in the saliva of patients in non obese diabetic patients as compared with systemically healthy individuals of both the groups showing chronic periodontitis. Myeloperoxidase level is increased in the saliva of patients in Type II diabetic obese patients as compared with systemically healthy individuals of both the groups showing chronic periodontitis. Myeloperoxidase level is increased in the saliva of patients in Type II diabetic obese patients as compared with non obese diabetic patients of both the groups showing chronic periodontitis.
