Abstract

The purpose of the study was to compare the effect of flap design on the postoperative sequelae of periodontal healing, time saved, damage to interdental papilla etc after the surgical removal of impacted mandibular third molar. 20 patients aged 18–40 years who required the removal of impacted mandibular third molar were divided into two groups of 10 each. Ward's incision and the incision distal to interdental papilla between 2nd and 3rd molar respectively included in the study. Periodontal pocket and time of starting the surgery were recorded preoperatively. Ward's incision and the incision distal to the interdental papilla b/w 2nd and 3rd molar were given for the removal of impacted mandibular 3rd molar. The effect of flap design on periodontal healing, time taken for surgery, damage to interdental papilla were recorded postoperatively. The duration of surgery and incidence of periodontal pocket was less in group 2 patients but there was no damage to interdental papilla in group 1 patients.
