Abstract

The estimation of the size of unerupted permanent teeth is an essential aspect in the treatment planning in the mixed dentition. The estimation is often made for unerupted permanent canine, first and second premolars and so as to better manage tooth size arch length discrepancies. The commonly used prediction method of Tanaka and Johnston is based on data from sample of children of North European descent. The accuracy of this method when applied to a different ethnic population is questionable. In this study, 118 study casts of North Indian subjects, in the age group of 12 to 15 years were made and the mesio -distal widths of permanent lower incisors and permanent upper and lower canine and premolars were calculated. The actual measurements on the cast were compared with the predicted values derived from Tanaka and Johnston's equations and statistically significant differences were found. The data illustrated the limitations of Tanaka Johnston method when applied to a sample population of other than European descent. Using this data, two linear regression equations were developed for tooth size prediction in North Indian children.
