Abstract Aim of the study The present study was planned to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of a commercially available herbal mouthwash (HiOra)R in comparison with chlorhexidine gluconate (Aster-X)R in improving oral health in patients undergoing dental procedures. Materials and methods This was a prospective, double blind, randomized, active-controlled, parallel group clinical trial conducted on hundred patients undergoing dental procedures. The subjects were divided into two equal groups and randomly assigned one of the two mouthwashes. At initial visit Plaque Index, Gingival Index and OHI-S was calculated for all the patients and was repeated at an interval of one month for two consecutive months. The volunteers rinsed their mouth thoroughly for 30 seconds with 15 ml of randomly allocated mouthwash during this period. Statistical analysis Statistical analysis was performed using Graphpad Prism version 4.03. Plaque index showed a significant linear decrease from baseline from the 2nd visit onwards and showed further improvement with continuation of treatment in both groups. A similar trend was seen with gingival index. There was significant reduction in OHI-S at the end of 2nd and 3rd visit in both groups and were statistically comparable. Tooth discoloration was observed in two patients during 3rd visit in chlorhexidine mouthwash group. Conclusion The present study indicates that herbal mouthwash had a comparable efficacy to that of chlorhexidine. It also suggests that tooth discoloration occurred with chlorhexidine whereas no adverse events were reported or observed in the herbal mouthwash group thus, indicating efficacy and safety of herbal mouthwash.
