Abstract

Background and Objectives

As on today the endodontists are facing more and more retreatment cases. So in this study we are comparing antimicrobial efficacy of Triphala solution and Distilled water (DW) in relation with Chlorhexidene(CHX) against Enterococcus faecalis (E.faecalis).

Materials and Methods

In this study root canals of 90 human permanent single rooted teeth with round canals were prepared with hybrid technique and sterilized. Then the samples were contaminated with E.faecalis for 7 days to form a biofilm. After 7 days, the infected samples were irrigated with following irrigantsi.e CHX (Gp I), Triphala (Gp II) & DW (Gp III) with different volumes (5, 10, 15ml) and assessment of antimicrobial efficacy was done.

Results

On applying ANOVA AND POST HOC test, statistically significant difference was observed when 5ml CHX was compared with 5ml Triphala and 5ml DW, also no statistical significant difference when 5ml Triphala was compared with 5ml DW. But no statistical significant difference was observed when 15ml CHX was compared with 15ml Triphala& 15ml DW.

Conclusion

All the 3 irrigants showed acceptable antimicrobial efficacy against E.faecaliswhen 15ml of the irrigant was used.
