Abstract Introduction Antenatal mothers report intense sensory pain during first stage of labor and more effective pain in all stages of child birth even though they received more analgesia. The process of labor may produce normal anxiety. Music distracts from the perception of pain and relieves anxiety. This study was undertaken to assess the effectiveness of music therapy on pain perception and anxiety level among antenatal mothers in first stage of labor. Aim To assess the effectiveness of music therapy on pain perception and anxiety level among antenatal mothers in first stage of labor. The experimental group received 30 min music therapy during first stage of labour and the levels of pain in both the groups were assessed by using Numerical rating scale and anxiety level by using the self structured anxiety assessment scale during the observations. The socio demographic sheet which was structured interview schedule was filled by investigator. Results Most of the study subjects experienced moderate to severe pain perception and moderate anxiety level during first stage of labor. Music therapy in first stage of labor was effective in reducing the pain perception and anxiety. However; it was not associated (at p≤0.01) with the age, parity, religion, education, occupation, area ofresidence, type of family.
