Abstract

Allelopathy is the competitive ability of plant through which they can either stimulate or inhibit the growth of different plant species. This ability is conferred on the plants through numerous chemical substances (allelochemicals). Those allelochemicals are released by the plant which influences the growth, physiology and behavior of neighboring species. Various compounds are secreted via plant leaves, stem and roots, which gather in soil and inhibit weed growth. Allelochemicals are supposed to be secondary metabolites which constitute phenolic compounds, flavonoids, juglone (quinone), terpenoids, non-protein amino acids, alkaloids, steroids etc. Allelopathic rice plays an important role in suppression of weeds, and if appropriate cultural management practices are followed, it would definitely improve weed control in paddy fields, along with minimizing pollution due to indiscriminate use of weedicides. Present paper deals with the importance of allelochemicals, their fate after releasing, and effect on soil microbiology and overall allelopathic ability of rice.
