A new species of nostoc isolated from Kerala, India Thilak Swetha T., Madhusoodanan P.V.1, Pradeep N.S.1 Sree Narayana Guru College, Chelannur, Kozhikode 1KSCSTE-Malabar Botanical Garden and Institute for Plant Sciences, Post Box No. 1, Calicut Online published on 26 March, 2024. Abstract A filamentous cyanobacterium (MBG-AL214) was isolated from paddy field of Kozhikode, Kerala and described as a new species of the polyphyletic genus Nostoc Vaucher. Morphological and molecular characterizations of this species were performed. It was observed that the nature of colonies and shape and size of the akinetes differed significantly from rest of the Nostoc species. For its molecular characterization. 16S rDNAanalysis was performed Sequencing of 16S rDNA gene of strain MBG-AL214 showed only 89.32% similarity with Aliinostoc morphoplasticum strain NOS and 87.21% similarity with Nostoc punctiforme strain PCC73102. The morphological and molecular observations revealed that the isolate was new species of the genus Nostoc, the name of which has been proposed as N. keralensis sp. nov.
