Study of Side View Mirrors Design on the Fuel Consumption of a Car Alam Shah*, Mahmood S.M Mechanical Engineering section, University Polytechnic Faculty of Engg and Tech, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi-110025, India *E-mail: shah_alam67@yahoo.co.in
Online published on 18 March, 2016. Abstract In this paper an effort has been made to reduce the drag on vehicle moving with high speed. The drag forces acting on flat back circular side view mirror and hemispherical back side view mirror has been calculated at low Reynolds number. It is found that drag force and the work done to overcome it are directly proportional to the drag coefficient. Now the reduction in fuel consumption has been computed in both cases. The maximum reduction in fuel consumption due to change of side view mirror back design from flat to hemispherical is computed as 29.3 liters per year when vehicle is running at 120 km/h. Top Keywords Drag, side view mirrors, flat back, hemispherical back. Top | |
