Abstract

To assess fluid and electrolyte balance various serum and urine analytes were determined in 30 healthy male and female Rathi calves. The mean values of serum electrolytes viz. Sodium, potassium and chloride were 130±2.00 m mol/l; 4.90±0.15 m mol/l and 105±5.0 m mol/l respectively; blood specific gravity and viscosity were 1.054±0.002 and 4.21±0.50, respectively; serum osmolarity and serum bicarbonates were 289±8.0 m osm/litre and 27.33±2.12 m eq./litre, respectively. The mean values of urine analytes viz. pH, titratable acidity, colour, specific gravity, osmolarity, sodium, potassium and chloride were 7.4±0.21, 8.7±1.012, pale yellow, 1.040±0.03, 976±40.01 mosm/l, 160.89±7.12 m mol/l, 240.98 ±23.76m mol/l, and 220.98±12.99 m mol/l, respectively.
