Abstract Whether there is a relationship between stress and cancer? A number of researchers are of the view that stress has so many health consequences including cancer too. The epidemiological studies conducted from this point of view in the last three decades suggest that chronic stress plays significant role in the causation and progression of cancer. Cancer is a serious health problem in India and it has increased by 324 percent between 2017 and 2019 and about eight lakh people lost their life due to cancer in the preceding year. As the medical reports suggest, it can be cured provided it is detected in its early stage and proper medical help is made available to the patients. There are a number of causes of cancer and its types are also varied. In some of the previous studies, attempts have been made to ascertain the psychological outcomes also of the cancer and how such problems can be managed to improve the mental health status and quality of life of cancer patients. As regards this paper, it deals with the concept of cancer, its types and consequences focusing especially on stress as experienced by the cancer patients and the possible relationship between stress and cancer.
