Utilization of maize processing industry byproducts as feed in goat

Abstract

This study was taken up to develop compounded cattle feed based on maize processing industry byproducts (MPIB) and assess its impact on the nutrient utilization and performance of goat bucks in comparison to conventional diet. The MPIBs include maize husk/bran, maize germ, maize oil cake and maize gluten meal (MGM). The MGM contained 66.5% CP out of which more than 55% is rumen undegradable protein. Maize germ, maize grit and maize oil cake also contained 16.55, 14.29 and 22.95% CP, respectively. While maize germ and cake also contained 14.5-15 and 16.35% EE. The MPIBs and waste bread (WB) were used to formulate iso-nitrogenous and iso-caloric concentrate mixture (MPIB-WB) comparable to that of conventional control concentrate mixture and fed to ten goat bucks divided in to two equal groups for 106 days growth study. The total mixed rations (TMR) contained concentrate and roughage in 40:60 ratio. The roughage portion was made up of green fodder and wheat straw in 70:30 ratio. The daily DM intake was comparable in both the groups. The digestibility of cell wall constituents (CWC) was improved (P<0.01) in animals fed diet containing MPIBs based concentrate mixture as compared to those fed control diet. The blood profile parameters were comparable in both the groups, except that blood glucose and albumin concentration was higher (P<0.01) in MPIBs fed group as compared to those fed control diet. The urinary excretion of purine derivatives, N-retention, apparent biological value and the average daily gain (ADG) were comparable in both the groups. The rumen studies conducted on three rumen fistulated adult goat bucks revealed that feeding of MPIBs based feed improved (P<0.01) the rumen volume in comparison to those fed control feed, without affecting dilution or outflow rate from the rumen. It was concluded that the MPIBs based compounded feed could be utilized efficiently, without any adverse effect on nutrient utilization, health and performance of goat bucks.
