Abstract Aim To search for the best pain relieving medicament in acute symptomatic pulpitis. Materials and Method This study was designed to compare and evaluate the pain relieving ability of vitamins & minerals preparation (Eldervit ZC), corticosteroid preparation (Dexona), and Eugenol in acute symptomatic irreversible pulpitis, when used as sedative dressing. The study sample composed of 60 patients during 15-months period. Pain was recorded on 1st, 3rd and 7th day using visual analog scale for pain. The data obtained were cross tabbed followed by Kruskall-Wallis Test and Mann Whitney U Test performed using statistical package SPSS version 15. Results On comparison between the groups Eldervit ZC, Dexona, and Eugenol, Eugenol showed consistent pain relieving ability with p < 0.001, which was very highly statistically significant. Conclusion It can be concluded that Eugenol can be used as sedative dressing in patients with symptomatic pulpitis as a temporary measure though effective treatment will always be pulpectomy.
