Inheritance of Resistance to Races 21 and 40 of Stem Rust in Common Wheat

Summary

The present investigations dealt with the inheritance of black rust resistance in varieties of common wheat. The inheritance of seedling resistance to race 21 and 40 of stem rust was studied in six varieties, E.G.953, N.P.790, E.871, E.581, E.220 and K.117A. Kharchia was used as the susceptible parent. The genetic analysis of the varieties was based on F2 families from backcrosses to the susceptible variety Kharchia. The data from the F2 generation of the diallel crosses of the resistant parents was utilized to establish the presence or absence of common genes in the varieties studied. The resistance genes carried by each variety were identified from the results of test crosses with Marquis lines carrying single genes for resistance (Sr6Sr11 excluding Sr10). Only the previously identified genes have been noted except in one case, which seem to be different and has thus been named as Sr581.

The following genes for black rust resistance are present in the varieties studied. E.G. 953 carries Sr8 and Sr11. The former conditions a (l-l±) type of reaction while the latter gives a hypersensitive reaction to races 21 and 40. N.P.790 carries Sr8 and Sr11. E.871 carries only Sr11. E.581 carries Sr11 plus an additional gene Sr581. The latter conditions 1–1+ type of reaction to both races. E.220 carries Sr8 and Sr11. K.117A carries the gene, Sr581, which is also present in the other Kenya variety E.581.

Five out of the six varieties carry a common gene Sr11. Three of the varieties also carry Sr8. Only one different gene Sr581 has been discovered.
