Summary

The magnitude and nature of gene action in a set of 184 elite inbreds, crossed with two cytoplasmic male-sterile lines, Tift. 23A and Tift. 18A, were studied. Non-additive gene action was present in all the three characters, i.e., tiller number, ear length and ear girth, while substantial additive gene action was also present for ear length.

The inbred and hybrid analyses showed partial dominance for tiller number and ear girth, and overdominance for ear length, in the crosses with Tift. 23A. In the hybrids with Tift. 18A, partial dominance for tiller number and ear length but slight overdominance for ear girth was observed. Substantial heterosis in the hybrids for ear length in both the backgrounds of Tift. 23A and Tift. 18A was also observed. Recombination was found to be a major cause for the diversity of the g.c.a. of the inbreds derived from the limited number of complexes. The possibility of the creation of germ plasm complexes, involving desirable inbreds and hybrids is indicated.
