Summary

A study of the performance of Mexican dwarf wheats which are responsive to higher fertility levels and which do not lodge was made at the Government Research Farm, Kanpur for three consecutive years with a view to testing their suitability under local conditions for direct introduction of some of these varieties to increase wheat production. The results indicate that the Mexican dwarf varieties particularly Sonora 64, Sonora 63 and Lerma Rojo 64 do respond to higher levels of fertility and being stiff-strawed and short in stature, can withstand high winds and do not lodge. With improved technology, e.g., shallower seeding (5 cm.), slightly higher seed rate, (100 kg/ha.), early first irrigation (after three weeks of seeding), two irrigations during reproductive phase and immediate harvesting after maturity, these varieties are capable of giving much higher yields than the 52.3 q./ha. obtained under Kanpur conditions which by no means were ideal. However, it may also be pointed out that the grain colour as well as size of Mexican dwarfs is inferior to that of Indian wheats.
