Summary

Root and shoot development studies were carried out on 30 triticale, 5 aestivum, 5 durum and 4 rye varieties under laboratory conditions up to 10 day stages. Root development studies revealed that triticale, durums and rye were alike with reference to number of seminal roots whereas aestivums had lesser number of seminal roots. For length of seminal roots, triticales and durums were at par with each other but both being superior to aestivum. Hence, in general, triticales and durums appeared to have better root system than that of aestivum. Triticales exhibited faster shoot growth which appears to be the reason for their good seedling vigour. Dry matter accumulation in root and shoot during early period was faster in triticales and rye as compared to aestivum and durum wheats.
