Abstract

The pattern of phyllotaxy in jute was generally octastichous type with a very few exceptions. The direction of leaf spirals was found to vary amongst different varieties. In cultivated olitorius varieties, this direction was mostly left in contrast to right sided spirals exhibited by the cultivated capsularis varieties. Variability exists in respect of leaf angle in different jute genotypes. Leaf angle was found negatively correlated with internode length. Leaf angle in jute is an important criterion which may be exploited in a recombination breeding programme.
