Incidence and pathomorphology of kidney affections of buffaloes in Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh, India

Abstract

The gross examination of kidneys during necropsy is very much helpful in the diagnosis of various disease conditions in buffaloes. The present study was carried out on pathomorphology of kidneys in buffaloes. A total of 500 buffaloes ranging from 4 to12 years of age were examined, of which 42 (8.4%) cases were found to be affected with various pathological conditions. The nephrolithiasis condition was found to be highest (8; 1.6%) followed by hydronephosis (6; 1.2%), vascular abnormality (5; 1%), pyelonephritis (4; 0.8%), interstitial nephritis and glomerulonephritis (3; 0.6%), hypertrophy, hypoplasia, amyloidosis, fatty degeneration, polycystic kidney and calcification (2; 0.4%), renal infarction, pigmentation and embolic nephritis (1; 0.2%). Present study concludes that a significant number of buffaloes suffer from spontaneous renal conditions and managemental condition in buffalo farming is one of the most important factors, which should be improved to minimize the pathological conditions of kidneys.
