Abstract

Two fifty two broiler chicks were fed diets containing chlorprifos (50 and 100 ppm) and acetamiprid (100 and 200 ppm) either singly and in combination for 28 days from 8th day. Chlorpyrifos (100 ppm)+acetamiprid (100 ppm) fed birds on necropsy revealed edematous proventriculus andulceratedgizzard mucosa. Duodenum and caecum in all the treated birds exhibited haemorrhages. Microscopically, proventricular mucosa showed crypt elongation, mononuclear cell infiltration and glandular necrosis, while gizzard showed interglandular fibrosis and mononuclear cell infiltration. Duodenum of only chlorpyrifos (100 ppm) fed birds showed increased goblet cell activity and fused villi. Changes were more intense in birds fed with chlorpyrifos (100 ppm) and acetamiprid (100 ppm) with mononuclear cell infiltration and degenerated intestinal glands. Jejunum of the intoxicated birds showed desquamated epithelium and fused villi at higher doses and in combined toxidty.Caecum revealed desquamated epithelium, necrosis and mononuclear cell infiltration in all intoxicated birdswith significant change in combined toxicity.Pancreas revealed reduced zymogen granules and interstitial cell infiltrationin combined toxicity. The study indicated pathological effects of these insecticides, either alone or in combination, in various organs of digestive tract of broilers.
