Abstract

Patent ductus arteriosus is a congenital defect of heart in which there is a persistent communication between the thoracic aorta and the pulmonary artery. Valvular haemal cysts are the congenital blood cyst mostly found on the mitral valve of heart. Both these defects are common in humans and rare in animals except dogs. A twenty days old male Jersey cross bred calf died suddenly was brought for postmortem examination. On post-mortem examination, ductus arteriosus was found patent. Right atrioventricular valve revealed haemorrhages and a raised glistening blood cyst. Though the valvular haemal cysts of the heart are said to be congenital, the pressure overload due to patent ductus arteriosus might cause the mechanical injury to the valve leading to the haemal cyst formation.
