Abstract Calcinosis circumscripta is a rare disease that has been reported in various species of animals and human beings and is characterized by solid or multiple ectopic deposits of calcium salts in soft tissues. However, it occurs in large breed dogs under two years old with high incidence in German shepherd dogs. A 13 months old German shepherd male dog, because of an inflammation on the hip joint, was referred to a veterinary surgery clinic. At gross examination, there was a mass, which was adhered to the fascia of the muscles near the hip joint. In appearance, the mass contained chalky calcified, very firm, white in color and hard to cut nodules with different sizes several samples were collected and fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin. Histopathological examination demonstrated light to dark basophilic materials deposits in subcutice areas with peripheral granulomatous reaction that were separated by fibrous connective tissue. Special staining method, Von kossa, confirmed the mineral nature of deposits as black colored materials. Top Keywords Calcinosis circumscripta, Dog, Dystrophic calcification, Histopathology. Top |
