Abstract

The study was carried out to assess the effect of graded levels of sugarcane press mud (SPM) through concentrate mixture on immune status and histopathological changes in vital organs of Muzaffarnagri lambs. Twenty one Muzaffarnagari male lambs (aged3-5 months, mean body weight 11.70±0.29 kg) were randomly distributed in three groups, seven in each group as per completely randomized design (CRD). The control (SPM0) group lambs were maintained on concentrate mixture without SPM, SPM10 group lambs were maintained on concentrate mixture containing 10% SPM and SPM20 group maintained on concentrate mixture containing 20% SPM for a period of 180 days. All the lambs were offered required amount of iso-nitrogenous concentrate mixtures, and ad libitum wheat straw and water. The intake of concentrate-roughage ratio during experimental period were 61:39, 60:40 and 59:41% in lambs of SPM0, SPM10 and SPM20 groups, respectively. Irrespective of dietary variations feeding of SPM had no undesirable effect on humoral as well as cell mediated immune responses of lambs. Similarly, no histopathological changes were noticed in liver, kidney, heart, lungs, spleen, testes and intestine of lambs fed with 10% and 20% SPM as compared to control (SPM0). It was concluded that SPM can be incorporated up to 20% level in the concentrate mixture of lamb's diet.
